Local produce – food for thought

The supermarket in Le Beausset is great, a real treasure trove of wines, huge selection of vegetables, fish and breads.

But, there is also a not-to-be-missed fruit and vegetable stall just opposite Carrefour, which has a fantastic selection of seasonal goods.

At this time of year (end of September) we were thrilled to see a selection of mushrooms on offer. We bought three kinds of mushroom, chanterelle, pied de mouton and cepe, plus a huge bulbs of garlic, the tallest basil plant I have ever seen, a variety of tomatoes – green, yellow, red, pink and heart-shaped ones. (I lack the official names, but can tell you they tasted great). Add to that shallots and crusty bread and we had ourselves a mini-feast for our first night at La Daby.

Back at La Daby, we cooked the mushrooms with some crème fraiche and shallots and plenty of garlic. We each tore hunks of crusty bread with rich butter and a little basil to season. To accompany our meal, we sampled a local red wine (bought from the supermarket) and enjoyed the meal sitting at the table outdoors as the sun went down.
